Hi @Firetim, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding fax issues!
Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to get your fax working on the HP OfficeJet Pro 6968:

Check Fax Setup

  • Make sure the phone line is properly connected to the 1-LINE port on the printer (not the 2-EXT port).
  • If using a DSL line, connect a DSL filter between the wall jack and the printer.
  • Ensure you are using an analog phone line (faxing might not work with digital or VoIP lines).

Run Fax Test

  • On the printer's control panel, go to SetupFax SetupRun Fax Test.
  • If errors appear, follow the suggested fixes.

Verify Dialing and Phone Settings

  • Confirm that you are dialing the correct fax number with the correct format (including area code, if required).
  • If using a PBX system, check if you need to dial a prefix (e.g., “9”) for external numbers.
  • Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM) if faxes are failing midway:
    • SetupFax SetupAdvanced SettingsError Correction ModeOff.

Check Fax Speed and Mode

  • Reduce the fax speed:
    • SetupFax SetupAdvanced SettingsFax Speed → Set to Slow (9600 bps).
  • If using VoIP or digital phone service, enable Fax to Answer Mode.

Ensure Auto Answer is On (For Receiving Faxes)

  • From the control panel, go to Fax Settings and turn on Auto Answer.

Test with a Different Phone Line

  • Try plugging the printer into another working phone line to rule out line issues.
  • Connect a telephone to the same jack and check for a dial tone.

Check for Interference

  • If using VoIP, DSL, or digital phone services, try adding a DSL filter or lowering the fax speed.
  • Disconnect any splitters, surge protectors, or long phone cords that may weaken the signal.
