HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

The fax stopped working on my Office Jet Pro. I tried the test fax and got the message, "The printers fax component has become damaged and cannot perform the fax test" Any ideas? Also how can I talk to a live assistant?

Hi @Remarkablyinc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP OfficeJet Pro shows “the printer’s fax component has become damaged and cannot perform the fax test.” The provided HP guidance suggests trying these general fax recovery steps:

  • Power reset the printer: Turn the printer off, unplug the power cord from the back, wait a few seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on. Then run the fax test again.

  • Make sure the printer is idle before running the fax test. If it is receiving a fax, copying, or doing another task, wait until it returns to idle.

  • Check the phone cord:

    • Use the phone cord that came with the printer.

    • Connect it from the wall jack to the 1-LINE port on the printer.

    • Do not connect the wall jack to 2-EXT; that port is only for other devices such as an answering machine.

  • Remove any phone splitter and connect the printer directly to the wall jack.

  • Confirm the line is analog, not digital.

  • If you use DSL, make sure a DSL filter is installed.

  • If the line is noisy, HP advises trying fax again after addressing line noise; poor line quality can affect faxing.

  • After fixing any issues found, run the fax test again.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
