I have an hp envy 4500 printer/scanner. It always scanned into documents folder as a pdf. Now it is scanning as a jpg into photos folder. I pull up scanner to try and change settings but now there isn't even a pdf option. drop down bar only gives jpg, bmp, png, tif options.  If I try to change file name to documents my computer gets error message  that says ...can't load scan profile. Your profile settings might not be compatible with this scanner. Windows will scan using the default setting. I have been using this pc and printer combo for several years and never had this occur before. So I'm unsure what has happened? Can anyone help me?

Hi @12beachy ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue you're experiencing with your HP Envy 4500 scanner likely results from a change in the scanning software settings or updates to your system or scanner driver. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve this issue:

1. Check HP Scanning Software

  • Ensure you're using the latest version of the HP Smart App or HP Scan and Capture software:
    • If you previously used a different HP software, confirm it's still installed and not replaced during updates.
  • Open the app and look for scanning options. Check if there's a Save as PDF or File Type option under the settings.

2. Use Windows Scan App

  • Open the Windows Scan App (pre-installed on Windows 10/11):
    • Search for Scan in the Start Menu.
    • Choose your HP Envy 4500 from the list of scanners.
    • In the "File type" dropdown, check if PDF is an option. If not, continue to the next step.

3. Reinstall Scanner Drivers

  • Reinstall the drivers for your printer/scanner to reset the profiles:
    1. Uninstall the current drivers from Settings > Apps.
    2. Download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support Website.
    3. During installation, choose the Full Feature Software and Driver package.

4. Adjust Scan Settings

  • If the issue persists:
    1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click on your HP Envy 4500 and select Scan Properties.
    3. Check the settings for available file types. If PDF is not listed, reinstalling drivers should restore the default profiles.

5. Reset Scanner Profiles

  • The error about "can't load scan profile" might indicate corrupted profiles. To reset:
    • Open the HP Scan software.
    • Select Preferences or Advanced Settings.
    • Delete or reset all profiles to their defaults.

6.  Check for System Updates

  • Ensure your Windows and printer firmware are up to date:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Check the HP website for firmware updates for your Envy 4500.

7. Troubleshoot Conflicts

  • If you've recently installed other imaging software, it might have overridden the scanner settings. Disable or uninstall conflicting applications temporarily to test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
