HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP laptop with windows 11. I've used HPsmart for ages and yesterday it locked up with the spinny wheel when I tried to scan. I've never had issues other than slight delays. I've tried removing it and reinstalling. I've used all the HP help sources and all I get upon opening the app is a blank page with the spinning wheel.

Hi @skibum21

Welcome to the HP support community.

It sounds like you're facing an issue where the HP Smart app is not functioning properly and keeps showing a spinning wheel when trying to scan or load. This can be due to several reasons, including software glitches, network issues, or corrupted settings.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem with the HP Smart app on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 and Windows 11:

1. Update HP Smart App and Windows

  • Ensure that the HP Smart app is updated: Open the Microsoft Store, search for HP Smart, and check if an update is available. If there is, install the update.
  • Update Windows 11: Make sure your Windows 11 is up to date. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.

2. Clear HP Smart Cache and Reinstall

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings, then navigate to Apps > Apps & Features.
  • Find HP Smart in the list, click on it, and choose Advanced options.
  • Click on Reset to reset the app’s data and cache.
  • Reinstall HP Smart: After resetting, uninstall HP Smart completely from Apps & Features in Settings. Then, go to the Microsoft Store, search for HP Smart, and reinstall it.

3. Check Printer Connection

  • Check that the printer is online and ready to print.
  • You can print a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel to verify its network status.

4. Check for Printer Software Issues

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, find your printer, and remove it.
  • Download the latest drivers from the HP Support website and install them again.

5. Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the tool from HP’s support website: HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to troubleshoot and fix any issues with the printer and scanning.

6. Check for Background Processes

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for any processes related to HP (like HPSmart.exe or similar) and end those tasks.
  • Restart HP Smart and check if it loads properly.

7. Use the HP Smart Web Version

If the issue persists and you need to scan or perform other tasks immediately, you can try using the HP Smart Web version (accessed via a web browser).

  • Visit the HP Smart Web and sign in with your HP account to access scanning and printing options.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
