Hi @curry4121,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP OfficeJet 3830 is not scanning handwritten documents using the HP Smart app, it could be due to a few different factors. Here are some potential reasons and solutions:

1. Scanner Sensitivity and Settings:

  • Increase Contrast and Brightness:
    • Handwritten text, especially on lined paper, can sometimes be faint or difficult for the scanner to distinguish. Try adjusting the contrast and brightness settings in the HP Smart app before scanning.
  • Change Scan Resolution:
    • Increase the scan resolution to capture more detail. This can help the scanner pick up finer lines and handwritten text more clearly.

2. Paper Type and Alignment:

  • Ensure Proper Alignment:
    • Make sure the paper is properly aligned on the scanner glass. Misalignment can cause parts of the text to be cut off or not scanned correctly.
  • Use a Solid Background:
    • If possible, use a plain white piece of paper as a background for the notebook paper. This can help the scanner focus better on the handwritten text rather than the lines on the paper.

3. Scanner Glass Cleaning:

  • Clean the Scanner Glass:
    • Dust or smudges on the scanner glass can interfere with scanning quality. Clean the scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth and ensure it’s free of any dirt or debris.

4. Check for Software Updates:

  • Update the HP Smart App:
    • Ensure that the HP Smart app is up to date. Sometimes, software updates include fixes that can improve scanning performance.
  • Update Printer Firmware:
    • Similarly, check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP OfficeJet 3830, as these can also improve scanning capabilities.

5. Try a Different App or Device:

  • Test with Another App:
    • If possible, try scanning the document using a different app, such as Windows Fax and Scan, or directly through your computer’s scanning software, to see if the issue persists.
  • Use a Different Device:
    • If you have access to another device, such as a different smartphone, tablet, or computer, try using it to scan the document.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @curry4121,

6. Document Type Settings:

  • Ensure Proper Document Type Selection:
    • In the HP Smart app, make sure you are selecting the correct document type. If the app is set to recognize printed text rather than handwriting, it might not scan properly. Choose "Document" as the type and see if that helps.

7. Scan Mode:

  • Switch Between Color and Grayscale:
    • Try scanning in grayscale instead of color. Sometimes, switching modes can help the scanner focus on the text rather than the lines on the paper.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you might want to try scanning the document using a different scanner or app to see if the problem is specific to the HP Smart app or the OfficeJet 3830. If the problem persists across different methods, there could be a hardware issue with the scanner.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
