suddenly my HP8710 printer is giving me a loud noise and a "scanner error" message.  It will print but will not copy or scan.  I have unplugged and done all suggested possibilities and no one around here repairs printers.  Any suggestions?

I am so frustrated but hope my solution helps others with this great Printer 8710 that has this "scanner failure" issue.  Every page I went to linked to an unknown page as the printer is old and no help at all except the same turn off back on etc. which did not work.  The scan doctor app said I had to update the software and again..no links except to fully uninstall and reinstall..which I was reluctant to do a the printer did PRINT but not COPY,

I did so many things but I think what I finally did it was that on the printer screen I went to Settings>there is a tab labeled SCHEDULE, then Update Print Apps.  I got a message it could not but when I got out and put a piece of paper into the printer suddenly it was ABLE TO COPY/SCAN!!!   So I truly believe that firmware update caused this issue.

Oddly, this issue in my older notes (because I cannot remember things well unless I write then down)  said I had this same noise and grinding sound and after unplugging and re-plugging it in downloaded something (must have been an update) and it fixed the scanner.

So, I am leaving it alone but did shut down the automatic updates to just alert me  by going to Settings/maintenance/Update printer Options and set to notify me.   I don't think I will update unless things do not work.

So hopefully my lengthy notes here will help others.

As additional information (as I could not see how I could edit my original question)..oddly there was a firmware update two days ago..if I check the firmware it says it is up to date..could this update have caused the issue of the scanner not working and giving me this error
