Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

aloha, it just took me a dozen attempts to get a screen name. Why? That's why you see gas stove. It wouldn't take refrigerator. Anyways, I have an older smart phone which I have no clue how to use and I'm glad I don't. I don't want to download apps to get the printer to work. That's why went hardwire USB.

Somewhere there must be options to actually make it work hardwire. The database mentions it but without any directions to cure the problem. Could you please help me?

this is my very first HP product. My last three brother printers require jumping through multiple hoops to scan and I was hoping HP made this user proof. Thank you for your help.

Ah ha........suspect the first question you ask me, I'm running Windows ultimate seven on an older Dell PC.

my word processor is Apache OpenOffice. Yes-sir-re-bob, I can't find any directions when I click on the computer icon for this printer. Yes, I successfully downloaded the interface and can print from a document.

Hopefully that answer some questions. Mahalo.

Yes, the Operating System is part of it.

Printer model "4100" could be one of several - I have chosen a "new" model for the purpose of the answer.

Printer

HP DeskJet Plus 4100 All-in-One series

Sample - Specifications for this series

Product Specifications for the HP DeskJet Plus 4120 All-in-One Printer (3XV14B)

Yes, the printer supports USB; specs says it can be done.

Printer Software

Yes, the printer supports Windows 7 - also perhaps not ideal - software says Windows 7 is supported.

If you have not done so, download-save-install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver for the printer

Full Driver / Full Feature Software does not require a sign-in to use the software.

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software

  • Download-and-Save the printer software (Full Feature Software / HP Smart / Easy Start)
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Reminder:  If using Easy Start, select the Full Driver

Easy Start...

About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver).

Any...

If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the last part of the driver installation)

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Full driver provides print and scan functions.

The Basics here:

 How to Scan (Windows)

1. HP Scan - Part of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver

Various Software / Applications for Scan

Additional Scan options are generally available, though the choices are far more limited in Windows 7.

Choose / Try what you can / like...others might be available...

2.  Windows Scan  Microsoft Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher

3.  Paint- the Original - Paint (mspaint) can be used to scan.

4.  NAPS2– “Not Another PDF Scanner”

  • Download-Save-Install >  NAPS2
  • Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
  • Includes an OCR feature – may need Ghostscript add-on (See NAPS2 forum entry)
  • Read the Support pages for information
  • Download, save, and install the NAPS2 software to use.

5.  HP Scan and Capture - Microsoft Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher

6.  HP Scan Extended

  • Download-Save-Install >  HP Scan Extended
  • HPSE is a subset an older Full Feature Software suite.  Leave your printer software installed, then install HPSE.
  • HPSE features are very similar to the HP Scan Software released after 2015.

NOTE:  Setup is similar for both Image JPEG and PDF scanning

Some options are model dependent.
