I want to scan photos and save as jpgs. A 4 x 6 inch photo gives a file size of 100 kb. When I tried the online help, they described advanced settings, but they are not seen for my scanner. Any suggestions? Or is this a common problem for HP scanners?

I am not at all sure I understand your question.

Scan software differs - not every program / software works like the others - what you get (options) depends on which software you are using the scan your photos.

The file size of the saved photo image (.jpg) depends on the resolution used to create the scan.  Selecting a higher DPI (resolution) will create a larger file size.

The following assumes the Full Feature Software is installed on the computer and that, as necessary, that the printer Firmware has been updated.

Not all software used to scan your photos / images can scan at higher resolution, though in general, scanning from the computer provides the best options to scan that include any available features and options.

Scans options are limited to what the software can do.

For example,

HP Scan and Capture

A particular scan software may reflect the highest DPI that the printer software can provide or it may be governed by its own restrictions.

Sample - Scan and Capture - Image Settings

Scan_and_Capture_0AScan_and_Capture_0A

Paint (mspaint)

This software can scan at the higher resolution available for the printer.

Note the sample scan at 1200 dpi takes much longer to complete - the speed depends on your printer, your network, and your computer.

Sample

9025_Scan_Paint_1200_DPI_Setup_19025_Scan_Paint_1200_DPI_Setup_1

Example - Scan image - Officejet Pro 8740 - HP Scan software

Set options on main menu > Click More > Select Image and select options

8740_Scan_Image _Auto-Detect-Color_18740_Scan_Image _Auto-Detect-Color_1
