Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have no problem printing from my desktop computer.  However, when I try to scan a document to my computer, I get an error message that the scan was unsuccessful for one of the following reasons:

. the connection to the computer has been lost

. the scan application on the computer is currently in use

. an OCR application is not installed on the computer

Hi @edo18,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the connection between your scanner and computer is a bit temperamental, or there's a software conflict. Let’s walk through some calm, clear steps to get you scanning again.

Step 1: Check the Connection

Even if printing works, scanning may rely on a different connection protocol.

  • If you’re using USB, try switching the USB port on your PC.
  • If you’re using Wi-Fi, make sure the printer and PC are on the same network.
  • Restart both the printer and the computer.
  • Try scanning from HP Smart or Windows Fax and Scan, not the printer control panel, to verify communication.

Step 2: Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

This tool is designed for exactly this situation.

  1. Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor
  2. Run the tool and select your printer.
  3. Choose Fix Scanning, and follow the on-screen instructions.

It’ll check for:

  • Firewall issues
  • Communication errors
  • Missing drivers or software

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
