Hi @OTS1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The uncommanded scanning issue you're experiencing with your Officejet 5255 printer could be caused by several factors. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this problem:
1. Check for Scheduled Tasks:
- HP Utility: Open the HP Utility software on your Mac and check for any scheduled maintenance tasks or scans. Sometimes, printers have scheduled self-maintenance tasks that could be misinterpreted as scanning.
- Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS): Access the printer’s EWS by entering the printer's IP address in a web browser. Check for any scheduled tasks or logs that might indicate why the printer is scanning on its own.
2. Update Firmware and Software:
- Firmware: Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can update the firmware through the printer's EWS or the HP Smart app.
- Software: Make sure that you have the latest version of the HP software and drivers installed on your Mac. You can download the latest versions from the HP Support website. Update the firmware on an HP printer
3. Check for Background Processes:
- Background Apps: Sometimes, background apps or processes might send signals to the printer. Check for any third-party software that might be communicating with your printer and disable it to see if the issue persists.
- Scan to Computer: Disable the "Scan to Computer" feature from the HP Utility or the printer’s control panel. This feature sometimes causes the printer to remain in a ready-to-scan state.
4. Network and Connectivity:
- Network Devices: Ensure no other devices on the network are inadvertently sending scan commands to the printer.
- Restart Network: Restart your router and printer to refresh the network connections.
5. Reset Printer Settings:
- Restore Defaults: As a last resort, you can restore the printer to its default settings. This will clear any settings that might be causing the issue. You can usually find this option in the printer's settings menu.
Detailed Steps:
Accessing HP Utility on Mac:
- Open HP Utility from the Applications or use Spotlight to search for it.
- Select your Officejet 5255 from the list of devices.
- Explore the available options for scheduled tasks and scan settings.
Updating Printer Firmware:
- Open a web browser and enter the printer's IP address.
- Log in to the EWS.
- Navigate to the firmware update section and follow the prompts to update.
Disabling Scan to Computer:
- Open HP Utility.
- Select your printer.
- Look for the "Scan to Computer" option and disable it.
