Hi @Deb557,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how confusing and frustrating this situation is. Your HP printer is marked as “invalid.” You can still print, but cannot scan, and you’re receiving Instant Ink cards. Let’s break this down and find the best solution.

Why This Happens

  • A printer marked invalid usually means:
    • The printer is no longer enrolled or recognized in HP Smart / Instant Ink.
    • The HP account or Web Services connection is broken.
  • Printing works because basic print functionality does not require HP app authentication.
  • Scanning fails because the HP app or Web Services are required for scan features.
  • Instant Ink cards are sent because your account is still active, but the printer status is out of sync.

What You Can Do

  1. Check HP Smart Account
    • Open HP Smart on your computer or phone.
    • Sign in and verify if your printer shows as Connected or Invalid.
    • If invalid, remove and re-add the printer.

  2. Enable Web Services
    • On the printer’s control panel:
      • Go to Setup → Web Services → Enable.
      • If already enabled, turn it off and back on.
    • Print the Web Services Info Page to confirm connectivity.

  3. Update Firmware
    • Go to HP’s official site: 👉 Official HP® Support
    • Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware.

  4. Reset HP App
    • Remove the printer from the HP app.
    • Re-add it using the app and sign in to your HP account.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
