Hi @johns33

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing that—it’s understandably frustrating when your printer can still print but refuses to copy. Since copying is a standalone function that doesn’t rely on the computer, this issue is likely tied to the printer’s internal scanner or control panel settings.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery process to restore copy functionality.

Step-by-step guide to fix copy issues

1. Power Cycle the Printer

This clears temporary faults in the scanner module.

  • Turn off the printer completely.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on.

Try copying again using the Copy button or touchscreen.

2. Check Scanner Glass and Lid

  • Open the scanner lid and inspect the glass for dust, smudges, or debris.
  • Clean gently with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner.
  • Ensure the lid closes fully—an open lid can block the copy function.

3. Use the HP App to Test Copy Function

  • Open the HP App.
  • Select your printer > Tap Copy.
  • Choose Black & White or Color, and follow the prompts.
  • If the app shows an error, note the message—it helps isolate the fault.

4. Run a Scanner Test

  • Press the Information button (i) on the printer to print a Printer Status Report.
  • If your model supports it, press Scan or Copy while the report is on the glass.
  • If nothing happens, the scanner may not be initializing.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can block internal functions.

  • Visit the HP Printer Firmware Update page.
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware.
  • Install via USB or Wi-Fi using the HP App or HP Easy Start.

Let me know how the printer behaves after these steps—I’ll guide you further if needed.
