Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Hi @danaekreider89,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To save a scanned document to your desktop instead of using the "HP Smart" application, you can follow these general steps.

  • Scan the Document: Use your HP printer or scanner to scan the document. Make sure it is connected to your computer and turned on.
  • Choose Scan Location: After the scan is complete, the "HP Smart" application may prompt you to choose a save location. If it does, select the desktop as the save location.

If the "HP Smart" application does not provide an option to choose the save location during the scanning process or you prefer to use a different method, you can follow these alternative steps:

  • Save to Desktop: Once the scan is complete, your scanned document should be available on your computer. To save it to the desktop, locate the folder where the scanned documents are stored.
  • Find the Scanned Document: Depending on your settings, the scanned document may be saved in a default folder, such as "Scans," "Documents," or "HP Smart Scans." If you are unsure, check the application's settings or refer to the user manual for your printer/scanner.
  • Move the Document: Once you locate the scanned document, you can drag and drop it onto your desktop. Alternatively, you can right-click on the file and choose "Copy" and then right-click on your desktop and choose "Paste."

Now, your scanned document should be saved on your desktop, allowing you to access it easily. If you want to change the default scan location for future scans, you can usually do that in the settings of the "HP Smart" application or the printer/scanner driver software on your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
