"HP Solution Center" generates an error icon: Large lowercase "f" and a lowercase "i" in a circle

Printer portion of the 4500 works fine.

But when I want to scan, I typically use the HP Solution Center app.  When I invoke this app, the program announces itself for perhaps 1 second, then displays:

Did you ever get the HP Solution Center to start working again? I used HP Print and Scan Doctor to scan my documents and saved to PC, but still could not get HP solution Center to work.

Additional data points:

My Officejet 4500 is connected via a hard-wired LAN.

Windows (8.1) 'automatically' updated itself twice, at the same time this problem started.

No clear idea what Windows updated.  I thought about trying to back out these updates, then chose NOT to do so.

And the printer still works fine.

HP PSDr didn't find anything on my system either.

There seems to be a new program to manage scanning--HP Scan and Capture.  I dug through hp.com and wasted entirely too much time before I unearthed this.  By installing this I was finally able to scan, but HP dropped the ball big time on just cutting us off abruptly, with no link to transfer to the new system.
