I have made some technical drawings in black ink on graph paper where the grids are printed in "non-photo blue".

I expected that when I scanned or copied the original drawings the output would be just the black lines of my drawings but instead the copies have the blue grids as clearly as in the original.

Is there a special setting to use to prevent the blue lines printing - or doe "non-photo blue" not work in the scanner?

@Scampo320, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I see that you'd like to make black and white copies, we can adjust the settings to avoid the blue lines. Follow the steps below-

Open the copy settings menu from the printer control panel.

  1. Touch Copy, Copy Document, or Copy Photo on the printer control panel, and then change any available basic settings as needed.

  2. Touch Settings or the gear icon  to view more copy settings.

    NOTE:

You might need to scroll down the control panel screen to access all settings. Available settings vary by printer model.

    • 2-Sided Copying: Copy on both sides of the paper. Depending on the model, the menu is typically available under the Document copy settings. Either touch On, select the box next to the setting or select an available option from the drop-down menu.

    • ID Copy: Prints both sides of an identification card or driver's license on a one-sided copy. The printer prompts you to flip the ID card over to complete the copy job.

    • Size or Resize: Change the size of the copy. Options can include a list of presets, custom sizes between 25 and 400 percent of the original size, Fit to Page, and an Actual Size setting to make a borderless copy.

    • Paper Size: Select the paper size you are making the copies on, or select Automatic to let the printer detect the paper loaded in the tray.

    • Paper Type: Select the type of plain or photo paper you are making the copies on. If the incorrect paper type is selected, this might result in slow copy speeds.

    • Tray Selection: Select the paper input tray with the paper you are using for your copies.

    • Quality: Select an available copy quality level. Copy time can increase when using the best setting.

    • Lighter/Darker: If the original is faded or too saturated, make the copy lighter or darker.

    • Enhancements: Select the type of item you are copying to improve quality, such as sharpening text and image edges or improving faded colors in photos.

    • HP Copy Fix: Automatic copy quality and skew adjustment tool.

    • Collate: Turn the feature on or off for multi-page copies.

    • Binding Margin or Margin Shift: Touch On to copy pages with a margin shifted to the left side of the page.

    • Save Current Settings or Set as New Defaults: Retains the selected settings for future copy jobs.

    • Restore Factory Defaults: Restores all copy settings to their original defaults.

  3. Depending on the printer, touch Start, or return to the main Copy screen by touching Back, and then touch Start Black, Start Color, or OK to start the copy job.

To scan in black and white, you can change the settings on the HP Easy Scan. Follow the steps below-

Before you scan a document or photo, set preferences such as resolution, color mode, orientation, or page size.

  1. Open HP Easy Scan, and then make sure your printer is selected from the Scanner drop-down menu.

  2. Open the Presets drop-down menu, and then select a scan job.

    • If you are scanning a simple item, such as a single, one-sided, letter-size document, select one of the suggested shortcuts, and then skip to the next step. You can crop, rotate, or change the brightness of your scan later.

    • If you are completing a more complex scan job, such as a multi-page, legal-size, or detailed document or photo, click Edit Settings, and then continue with these steps.

  3. Change scan settings, such as orientation, color mode, resolution, and page size.

  4. If you are scanning two-sided documents (duplex), select the Scan both sides of page checkbox.

Selecting the Scan both sides of page check box

  5. Click Done to save the presets for this scan job.

Change the mode from color to the required choice.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for your suggestion TEJ1602.

Unfortunately there are no settings to adjust that make the "non-photo blue" grids disappear.

I have tried many many combinations of settings, with no change in outcome.

Thanks for replying!

Could you share the picture of the original image and the scanned image? It would be great if you can mark the non-blue grid lines for further assistance.

Keep me posted.

Hi there.

It's not a picture, but a sheet of blue graph paper.

The problem is that the specific blue tone is not supposed to print when scanned or copied, but it does.

I'll happily send a copy of a scan, but I don't think there's anything to learn from it.

The maker of the paper has said that when they scan with 4-bit grey-scale the grid isn't visible, but I don't know how to achieve that with my HP 7740.

There might not be anything to learn from the image but we can understand the issue better.

Please share the image of the page that you're trying to scan and the output too.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
