HP Smart Tank 7001 printer.  I just set up the new printer and it works fine (prints, scans, etc.).  However, I noticed that the light bar below the scanner glass blinks continuously.  The light bar strobes (flashes very briefly) about once per second.  There are no error messages on the display panel nor did the diagnoses software detect any problems and the firmware is up to date.  I performed a reset (turned the printer off, unplugged it for one minute, plugged it back in and turned on), but the scanner light bar continues to flash.  Is this normal behavior or do I have a defective printer?   I'm afraid that the continuous flashing will degrade and rapidly age the scanner.

The continuous flashing of the scanner illumination bar on your HP Smart Tank 7001 is not typical behavior. Normally, the scanner light should only be on when actively scanning or copying. Since the printer functions well, and diagnostics have not detected any issues, it might seem like a minor glitch.

 

Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try.


  • Check for Firmware Updates: Even though your firmware is up to date, it's a good idea to manually verify on HP's support website for any recent updates. Sometimes newer firmware versions address specific issues like this.
  • Check Power Settings: Ensure the printer is not set to any special mode that keeps the scanner light active, such as an eco mode or fast scanning mode.
  • Factory Reset: Try performing a factory reset on the printer. This can sometimes resolve unusual behavior that a standard reset does not fix. You should be able to find instructions in your printer’s manual.
  • Check HP Smart App Settings: Since you are using the HP Smart Tank series, open the HP Smart app and navigate through the settings. Look for any settings that mention the scanner or lighting and see if there is anything that could be related.


If none of the above steps work and the flashing continues, it may be a hardware issue. Continuous flashing could indeed reduce the lifespan of the scanner over time due to unnecessary use.
