Hello, I have an OfficeJet Pro 8740  with damaged flatbed glass. I believe it has been damaged due to temperature shock. I was amidst moving and the device sat in my car during extreme cold. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to purchase replacement glass?

I am sorry you had to move during the recent Arctic Blast that covered so much of the country - this is just adding insult to injury.

Most consumer grade printers, of which the Officejet Pro 8740 series is a member, are not meant to be serviced by the consumer.  This makes getting parts a challenge.  Repair procedures are kept in documents / guides that are available to licensed repair technicians.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few ideas..

Try the Part Surfer.  A quick check shows many more parts for the Product K7S42A.  Of those parts, a few are available from HP.   The parts marked N/A are not available from HP.  If you can identify which part is what, these are likely available from other (online) vendors.  One way to try to identify a part is simply use Google to search for the part number.  If the part is available, there is likely an image on the internet.  Smiling.

 Open PartSurfer

  • Select your Country
  • Need Help?  Tab Self help > find and open the User Guide and FAQ

Use Part Surfer:

  • Enter your device Product Number , Serial Number, or Part Number in the Quick Search box
  • HINT: To see a system-specific list, replace the Product Number with your device Serial Number
  • Items accompanied by a tiny box in the Add-to-Cart column are available for purchase
  • N/A means the part is not carried / offered for purchase by HP.

Parts marked as available for purchase might be available from:  HP Parts Store

OR

Use your search engine to find the part number at your favorite online store.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you live in an urban area, consider calling your local Printer repair store.  On the West Coast, at least, places like Staples (an office supply store) might include an onsite printer repair depot.  At the least, you might be able to get the technician to tell you the part number and / or order the part for you.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Consider trying to find an "authorized" center in your region.  This can be a bit tricky:  While there are lots of printer repair houses in major cities, the "authorized" centers might be few and far between.   It takes only a short time to check.  Set the search parameter to your closest large city and the search radius to 100 miles.  If you find a center, you can call and they might ship you the part.

Service Centers

  • Find Authorized support providers - USA
    • If necessary, change “Current country” location to your region.
    • To “get close”, click on the map – better information is provided when you use a Zip Code or City

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You can try contacting HP Technical Support.

If the printer is out of warranty, they might want to charge you for the phone support AND then you would have to pay for the part (if you can get it).  Nonetheless, if all options fail, this is a really nice printer and it is worth trying to get it fixed (my personal opinion).

Reminders

  • Use the serial number of the device to submit the case (do not post that information here).
  • In those areas where Chat is an option, Chat service hours are likely restricted.
  • Chat is not available in every region.

In the event that Chat is not available in your region:  Call the number provided in the HP directory, else submit your case online (to receive phone contact information)

  • HP will advise you there is a fee for phone support and / or other services when your computer / device is no longer under warranty.  This is normal business practice.

  • HP may tell you that certain services are not covered under warranty.  This is normal business practice.  Standard Warranty typically covers specific hardware issues as explained in the Warranty contract. Care Pack coverage and warranties differ by package.

  • USA / Canada:  Regional contact information is displayed after you submit an online case.  Use the serial number of the device to submit the case to HP.

  • HP websites are the only ones allowed to use the HP copyright circle/logo.  Look for the copyright on any website claiming to be HP. If in doubt, scroll to the bottom of the Website to find HP copyright logo.

Thanks so much for the prompt and precise information! This will surely get me on my way. I'm moderately adept at repair (have repaired game consoles and cell phones in a commercial environment), so I am confident I can get this item replaced.
