my scan option/button on the touch screen of the printer unit is not responding. all other options function except scan. is there a way to bypass this and be able to scan or is the whole printer unit junk now? worth getting repaired?

Welcome to the HP Community --
Dragon Opinion
Were it mine to do, I would not spend money to repair the printer --
What?
The printer series was truly the "best of its kind" for its time --
The printer's time is mostly past.
Old hardware -- the next thing to break might be something worse.
That said, I am biased toward newer tech -- You should do what you want for your situation.
The best printer in this class right now is the OfficeJet Pro 9025e -- not cheap -- the 9025e does has all the "bells and whistles" for this type of InkJet Printer. The OfficeJet Pro 9015e is nearly as nice.
Personal choice.
==================================================
OK - Try to fix what you have ...
If you have not done so,
Try the Power Restart on the printer -
Restart is "first step" to see if the printer can fix itself.

Illustrations of the icons and explanation how to use the printer control panel to swipe, select, manage various settings.
I cannot explain why a standard icon would be missing from the printer control panel.
What to do?
If the printer is connected to the network,
Try using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / adjust the tools and settings, including those for Scan.
EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Scan
=======================================
Not sure what you can do about using "Scan to Computer" if you cannot get to the scan icon from the printer control panel.
If you wish to do so, try Webscan (from within EWS).
First Time Use Only: Enable Webscan
- Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
- Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan
- Click Apply to save any changes
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Scan > Webscan
Example - EWS - Webscan
EWS_9025_Webscan_4
