@calpro, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand you're having trouble with your HP printer's scanner not working. Let's go through a few steps to help resolve this issue.

Check Scanner Connection

  • If you're using a USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected.
  • For wireless printers, confirm the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

Restart Devices

  • Power off your printer and computer.
  • Unplug the printer for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your computer.

Update Printer Drivers

Outdated drivers can cause scanning issues.

  • Go to the HP Support site: HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest full-feature driver package.

Try Scanning from HP Smart App

Sometimes scanning works better via the HP Smart app.

HP Smart

  • Install the app on your PC or mobile device.
  • Add your printer and try scanning from the app.

Check Windows Services (Advanced)

If you're on Windows and the scanner still doesn't work:

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Ensure the following services are running:
    • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
    • Shell Hardware Detection
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Right-click each and choose Start or Restart if they’re not running.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
