HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer

I upgraded from a MS surface laptop to a HP Envy laptop. My HP laserjet 1536dnf mfp can print but not scan. I deinstalled the old drivers and reinstalled the new drovers. Still does not find the printer when I attempt to scan. Printing works fine. What is the problem?

Hi there @Jde6, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

Since your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP prints but doesn’t scan after switching to a new HP Envy laptop, here are some steps to help resolve the issue:

Ensure Full Feature Software is Installed

The basic driver may only support printing. Please download and install the Full Software and Driver package from HP:

Official HP® Support

Use HP Scan Software or Windows Fax and Scan

After installing the full software:

  • Open HP Scan from the Start menu.
  • Alternatively, try Windows Fax and Scan:
    • Press Windows + S, type Fax and Scan, and open it.
    • Click New Scan and select your printer.

Check WIA Services

HP scanning relies on Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). To verify:

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Ensure it’s Running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

USB Connection Check

If you're using USB:

  • Ensure the cable is directly connected to the laptop (not via a dock or hub).
  • Try a different USB port.
  • Avoid using USB 3.0 ports if the printer is older, use USB 2.0 if available.

Firewall or Antivirus Conflicts

Sometimes security software blocks scanning:

  • Temporarily disable antivirus/firewall and test scanning.
  • If it works, add HP software to the allowed list.

If the suggestions helped solve the problem, please let us know by clicking “Accepted Solution.” It really helps fellow users find quick answers.

A quick “Yes” also goes a long way in showing appreciation!

Take care and happy computing!
