Is there an adjustment for paper width when scanning? Each time I scan a black border appears on one side of the document. For lack of a better explanation, it seems like the scanner is set up to scan a sheet that is 8 5/8" instead of 8 1/2 " wide. Any help would be appreciated

@Goldstar13397, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
The issue you're describing where a black border appears on one side of the scanned document can often be caused by misalignment of the paper on the scanner glass or incorrect scan settings. Here's how you can troubleshoot and adjust the scanner settings to resolve this:
Check Paper Alignment
Make sure the document is properly aligned on the scanner glass:
- Place the document face down on the scanner glass.
- Align it with the top-left corner or the alignment markers on the edge of the glass.
- Ensure the paper is not skewed or placed too far from the edge.
Use HP Smart App/HP App to Scan with Custom Settings
The HP Smart app allows you to fine-tune scan settings, including paper size and cropping.
Steps:
- Open the HP Smart app on your PC or mobile device.
- Select Scan > Scanner.
- Choose Document Size (set to Letter or A4, depending on your paper).
- Enable Auto-Crop or manually adjust the scan area using the preview.
- Preview the scan and ensure no black borders are visible.
- Save or share the scan.
Try HP Scan Software (Windows)
If you're using Windows, you can also use HP Scan (part of the full driver package).
Steps:
- Download the full software from the HP website: Official HP® Support
- Open HP Scan > Select Scan a Document or Photo.
- Choose Scan Size as Letter (8.5" x 11").
- Use the Preview to manually crop out any unwanted borders.
Additional Tips
- If scanning from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), ensure the pages are not curled or misaligned.
- Clean the scanner glass and ADF rollers to remove any dust or smudges that might affect scan quality.
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
