I can force scanning from my Mac System Preferences, but the software I got with my new 9010 printer seems to be not relevant to a Mac. It did have stuff user manual and setting up HPSmart app. Trying to use the HPSmart app to set up Scanning is useless. There are no drivers for Mac on the HP website. Is this another case of HP blowing off any Mac users ?

The answer seems to be that I reloaded the HP app from previous version 5.0 to new version 5.0 !! I now get the page shown in step 4, where before it showed a "Printer setup not complete". The only difference is that the dpi limit is 300 dpi for dsocuments from HP app vs using the Apple Menu/System Preferences/Printers&Scanners/Scan route, the resolution range shown is up to 1200 dpi. I assume that HP intentionally limits document resolution to 300 dpi. When photo is selected, dpi range is up to 1200 dpi.
For the EasyScan option, I miss the option to define the document name and destination of choice. I haven't used this option yet.

@oursdor, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Which version of macOS are you using?
Yes, there is no driver available for this model printer on the HP Support site. However, you may use the HP Smart app to print and scan.
Also, this printer is AirPrint compatible, you may install the printer using the AirPrint driver and use HP Easy scan or Apple Image Capture app to scan.
Kindly refer to this document to know how to scan from your MAC.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
