Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP LaserJet Pro MFP M438nda A3 printer installed in Dell All-in-One PC which has Windows 11 OS. Whenever I run HP MFP Scan software, the following error appears:

The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application  event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

Welcome to HP Support Community, @Sa37-09_25

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you see a “side-by-side configuration is incorrect” error when running the HP MFP Scan software for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M438nda printer, follow these steps:

1. Check Event Log for Details

  • Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer.
  • Navigate to Windows Logs > Application.
  • Look for errors related to the HP scan software to identify which component is causing the issue.

2. Use the sxstrace.exe Tool

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator:
  • Press Windows + X, select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Start logging with the command:

sxstrace.exe Trace -logfile:sxstrace.etl

Run the HP MFP Scan software to reproduce the error.

  • Stop the trace and parse the log:

sxstrace.exe Parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:sxstrace.txt

Open sxstrace.txt to identify the missing or corrupted component.

3. Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages

  • The error is often caused by missing or corrupted C++ Redistributable files.
  • Go to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable download page
  • Download and install the appropriate packages for both x86 and x64 systems based on the error details.
  • Restart your computer.

4. Reinstall the HP MFP Scan Software

  • Uninstall the existing software:
  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, find HP MFP Scan, and uninstall it.
  • Download the latest version from the HP Support site

Install the software again and check if it runs successfully.

5. Check for System Updates

  • Ensure Windows 11 is up to date:
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  • Install any pending updates and restart your PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
