HP Officejet Pro 8610e
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Suddenly my scans with the HP Officejet Pro 8610e no longer show the scanned text/image after saving the image as a PDF. The HP software does show the scanned text in the scanning window. I've use Windows 10, 64 bit with the Officejet and Adobe Acrobat Standard DC for years. In the past, I could immediately see the PDF image/text immediately after saving the scanned pages as a PDF, but now I just see gray space, but there is substance behind that PDF since I can convert (using Adobe tools) this saved PDF to a Word docx. Opening the docx document I can see the scanned image, but not in a form that I can edit (as I could with Adobe PDFs in the past). Note that I have no problem opening and reading a PDF document produced without using my HP Officejet scanner.

This has now been solved via...

I did a Google search on this problem and found this solution which worked (from Acrobat library)...

In a pdf, Open the Preferences (Edit tab), and go to the Page Display tab. In the section Page Content and Information, make sure that the option Show large images is checked.  You may have to restart Reader, but that should fix it. Thanks to originator of solution, Max Wyss.

Uninstall and reinstall the Adobe software to get the latest version of Adobe Reader.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Add or remove programs.

  2. In the list of installed programs, click Adobe Reader, and then click Uninstall or Yes.

  3. If a User Account Control message displays, click Yes.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal. If the software uninstall process does not start or an error displays while uninstalling, download Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed (in English) from the Microsoft website, and then try uninstalling again.

  5. After Adobe Reader uninstalls, close all programs and web browsers, and then restart the computer.

  6. Open a web browser, go to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (in English), and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Then, use HP Print and Scan Doctor.

HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free tool for Windows to help resolve common printing and scanning problems, such as missing or corrupt print drivers, connectivity issues, firewall issues, scan error messages, printer offline, and print jobs stuck in the print queue.

To Raj1788: Thank you for your very clear and detailed response. I did everything you suggested in the order you provided, but the problem is still there.

In the last few days I've struggled with this problem, I did come up with somewhat of a partial solution- although it does not allow me to read the older PDFs that I had generated by scanning. One clumsy work-around that I found was to scan the document on the HP Officejet with the HP software by saving it as "editable text (OCR)" (rather than as a pdf)- which saves the rescanned document as a rtf file, but then I cannot use the generated rtf file with the Adobe PDF tools nor can I open & read the pdf file that was scanned earlier.
