HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer

My printer and scanner has worked well for years, but suddenly my scanner will not open. I have shut down the computer, disconnected the printer power, left it for an hour, but scanner will still not start.

@gonzo14, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your scanner has suddenly stopped working on your HP OfficeJet 5740, even after restarting both the printer and your computer. Let's work through this together.

Check Scanner Functionality from the Printer Itself

Try initiating a scan directly from the printer’s control panel:

  • Tap Scan > Computer or Email (if configured).
  • If the option is grayed out or fails, the issue may be with the printer hardware or its connection to the computer.

Verify Printer Connection

Make sure your printer is properly connected:

  • USB: Try a different USB port or cable.
  • Wi-Fi: Ensure the printer is connected to the same network as your computer. You can print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer’s settings to confirm.

Reinstall the Printer Software

Corrupted drivers can cause scanner issues. Reinstalling can help:

  • Uninstall the existing HP software from your computer.
  • Download the latest full-feature software from the HP support page.
  • Follow the installation steps and ensure the scanner is detected.

Try Windows Fax and Scan or Preview (Mac)

  • Windows: Search for Windows Fax and Scan > Try scanning.
  • Mac: Open Preview > File > Import from Scanner.

Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes OS updates can affect scanner functionality. Make sure your system is up to date.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it could be a hardware fault with the scanner unit. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Well, I followed all your suggestions, 2X actually. HP finally told me that my system would not allow me to download/install the scanner program (I am desperately clinging to WD 7). This was on Saturday. So I kind of gave up.

Today, the scanner works, so all I can imagine is that the program did install properly after all.

So, you gave me the solution and for that I am grateful.
