I recently updated my HP Smart to the new HP app.  My printer works well, except now I can not scan a document.  Any advice?

Hi @DanF125,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. After the recent update from HP Smart to the new HP app, scanning issues on macOS 15 (Sequoia) are common because the older HP Smart scanning components were replaced. Here’s how to fix it:

Why It Happens

  • The new HP app uses Apple’s native scanning framework and HP’s updated drivers.
  • If the old HP Smart remnants or permissions conflict, scanning fails.

Steps to Restore Scanning

1. Remove Old HP Smart App

  • Go to Applications → Drag HP Smart to Trash.
  • Empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

2. Install the New HP App

3. Grant Permissions

  • Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.
  • Add the HP app and allow access.
  • Also check Files and Folders and Accessibility permissions.

4. Update Printer Drivers

5. Use AirPrint for Scanning

  • If the HP app still fails, add the printer using AirPrint
    • System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer.
    • Select your printer and choose AirPrint as the driver.
  • Then try scanning via Preview or Image Capture.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Will this solution work for an Envy 6055 on a new Macbook?  Machine prints  ok but hangs up on scanning with "preparing to scan " message.
