Hi @Charlie010640,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re seeing vertical lines when using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020/8025 series. Let’s run a few checks to help fix what’s causing this.

Clean the ADF scanner strip

Vertical lines during ADF scans are almost always caused by dirt, dust, or ink smudges on the thin ADF glass strip (not the main flatbed glass).

Lift the lid and you’ll see a narrow glass strip beside the main glass. Clean it with a lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner. Dry completely.

Clean the white backing strip

On the underside of the scanner lid, clean the white plastic strip that helps the scanner calibrate.

Any mark here can cause lines on ADF scans.

Check for debris inside the ADF path

Open the ADF cover and inspect for tiny bits of paper, dust, or correction-fluid residue.

Remove anything gently — even a small speck can create a vertical streak.

Test using the flatbed

Place the same document on the flatbed and scan.

If the flatbed scan looks clean, the issue is isolated to the ADF glass.

Run a copy directly from the printer

Use the ADF to make a copy (not a scan to app).

Same line = hardware/cleaning issue.

Line disappears = app/driver issue; try updating the HP Smart app.

Update printer firmware

On the control panel: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.

This refreshes the scanner firmware and helps resolve ADF image processing glitches.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
