After struggles with Vista and setting up a new user names, everything seems to be working, except that I have at least 3 of every contact.  Is there some way to tell the hot sync to not duplicate entries, both in contacts and dates?

Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Hotsync has 4 options, it can sync the files, move data from the PC to the device with an overwrite, move the data from the device to the PC with an overwrite, or do nothing at all.

Now with your issue it is making new contacts and calendar after each sync or is it now just syncing and updating the information? Also what version of Palm Desktop are you using?

After struggling to recover Pm date book from desk Ver 6.2.2 on Vista with Treo 650  (tried ti sync to M505 as backup thats what caused the loss of data)  I have wound up with a few months of double, and even triple entries going back till  Oct 21st  2001. Afraid to delete anything after recovering most of my lost data.

 Any safe way to remove the trips at least . I have removed a ton of double one by one but the triples would kill me

Well the safest way is to manually delete the contacts and calendar entry's. But I understand why you do not want to go though all that trouble. Before we get to far down this road, How does your 650 look? Does it have the same information? Or is it clean?(No duplicate data)

 The duplicate entrys go back to september 8th 2007 . Then the triplicates start  sept 7th  going back to 2001. They appear on my handheld also I just checked

     More bad news .    had done partial hot syncs with Desktop overrides handheld as I deleted some of the dupes whenever I had free time. I had cleaned up until about then end of Jan 2007.

 Then after running super spyware I had a major puter crash and did a sytem restore. Lo and behold all my calendar stuff was gone on the Treo. I  imported this time from the desktop bakup file I had made , then went to look at treo before syncing again , and I see the calendar data has been lost on the Treo .I am not talking about dupes for 2008 I removed the entire calendar on my Treo is empty plus some entries from last week in my calendar desktop are missing . The dupes are there in Desktop up to the end of  jan 2008 but thats prolly because I did incremental backups after removing some dupes and maybe I did not back up after last clean up of dupes , or I imported from the wrong file .

  In backups there is a DBA file that is 2.95  MB that was created 4 hours ago, and a Palm calendar dba.bak file that has 3.03 MB in it that was created 6 hours ago.

   Can the Palm import from  either file (the  BAK  file, or the DBA file).  The whole thing is buggy. I probably imported from the wrong file if such a thing is possible . SHould I just get everything onto my Treo and uninstall Desktop ver 6.2.2 and install ver 4.1.4e or 4.1.2 as it is known ??

If you only have the .bak files then you will need to go back to an older version of Palm Desktop. But before you go back you need to remove everything palm desktop related. You can keep the .bak file you have in a different folder. To do this look below.

***

You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something happens. Open Palm Desktop and select Address Book and select file and export. Then pick a location in the top other than the current one i.e. My Documents. Select all in the bottom and then create a file name called contacts. DO the same for Datebook, To do's and Memos.

Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do with Palm Desktop from your computer. The folder that is located under My Computer\Program Files\Palm or Palmone\(you may want to copy this folder to the desktop as well). One this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your registry.

Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel you are unsure of your self see if you have a friend that can help you or a PC technician that you can pay to help you. This will show them everything they need to delete. To help against this we need to do a backup.

Go to start and run type "regedit" without quotes

Highlight MY COMPUTER, go to File --> export. Should pop up with a Save As box. Current location is fine should be in My Documents. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.

Easiest way to make sure your doing the right one highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.

If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician. BUT do not turn off your computer.

The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here but if they are delete them)

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm

Next reboot your computer

Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks you for a username and you synced your device before, put in 'test" if you did not sync before create a hotsync name.

  I have  list of questions if you don't mind addressing them in order  Thank you

#!   In  my backup on my desktop which I made via Export instructions in this forum  I have :

 A:  address  mdb.bak

B:  Memo pad which when exported  to Palm Data backup desktop gets sent as a Video clip known as MPEG

 C: Palm Calendar DBA   which is a DBA file

 😧 Palm calendar.dba.bak  which is a BAk file

#2   is there anything wrong with  my Calendar file  it exports as a MPA then says MPEG file. In properties it says Video clip MPA file

#3  assuming there is nothing wrong with these files I have created for backup, including the Calendar file, can I not use these to import all my info into ver 4.1.2E or whatever it is called ?

Question #4  If I have all the info on my Treo correctly listed and my User name Peter on the treo , can't I sync them with ver 4.1.2E

#5  Why do I  lose the entire calendar while doing antispyware scan even though I run it with the desktop closed?

#6 Do you suggest I revert back to ver 4.1.2E or stay with   Ver 6.2.2 when and if I get it straightened out

Last and not least #7  Is there any way to get rid of dupes and trips that I have going back to 2001

I know its a lot to ask , but I appreciate if you would address each question in a comprehensive way thaI I can understand

Gratefully Peter P

I can load evrhing onto my Treo

Trust me I know how confusing this can be. Ok, to answer your questions. If you have any mdb.bak files then you have the data backed up but do not hotsync again and make a copy of those files if they are still in your username folder.

The DBA is a datebook archive file while mdb.bak is a hotsync backup.

Palm Desktop 6.2.2 needs to have the data saved to the file before you do a restart, anti-virus scan and so on. The active data does not get saved.

IF you have the data in your Treo all we would need to do is sync that device to your computer with no username on it and it will bring over the data. As for the dupes the safest way is to do it manually. But there are removers that can do that for you but might remove more than is need.

#6 is up to you. You can go back to 4.1.4E or use 6.2.2.

   More news  . If I try to export the memo pad to the desktop backup folder I have created , on top of the MPA file that says video clip and contains 108 Kbs

 I get a message that a Memo Pad file exists , do I want to everwrite it .

 I click yes and I get a  totally new file that says Memo pad.mpa.bak and this is a BAK file not a Video clip that has 176 Kbs in it.

  Would this work to import into Version 6.2.2

I dont understand all these extensions and which ones Ver 4.1.2E would recognize to import properly
