Everyrtime I click on save all , it only overwrites the  Uisprefrence file . How does this save anything , aside from preferences. I  realize you guys are not gettng paid to help, its just that I am trying to get a better understanding of a process I do not in any way understand .

Thx

Your in an active database. The save all saves any current changes and/or additions to the PC active DB. You might not see a modified date change but the data is saved to the .mdb

You if  you are curious like I am, might find this interesting . When I click on save all either in datebook or address mode and I keep my documents Palm OS windows  open on another screen , I can see the palm OS working , and the time of the UIS Prefernces in both datebook and address will change to the time on my

 clock.

The address  file in documents will not change time, but the datebook file will along with the Uis files.   I can actually see it changing on both  UisPrefdata files   and datebook file  (ONLY  NO extension ** Type data base file) in real time when the save which takes about 5 seconds or more finishes .

The address  ( again no extensions  Data Base File type)   file does not change  time nor do they have any mdb extension . The datebook files have a datebook.mdb.bak file  . There is no Address .mdb file to be found . Do you think my desktop can be corrupted , thus being buggy. I usually have to close out hot sync manager and reopen it to sync since I first got this Vista laptop.  It also takes between one and 2  minutes to sync.

Its much faster with ver 4.1.4 on my Xp pro laptop

Curious stuff no??

Now that I am taking a good look at my desktop, I realize that I have lost a lot of memos and entire categorys of memos plus data inside the categories that show up.

I will not be certain till I get back to Greece. The question is how do I recover what I have there and keep the new stuff that I will be adding till i get back ALA contacts datebook info new memos etc. How Do I merge that stuff when the time comes . I run 4.1.4.on XP in Greece. As an aside that email me when someone replies function does not work .

Thx again Peter P

I just  finished reading the backup instructions I had printed out. I followed the intructions I received in this forum and followed through by sending the backup files to a flash drive.

On the flash drive that  I used the " send  to " function from my Desktop backup folder I have

#1  a file named memo pad that is an 108 KB movie clip that someone insured me would be imported back to memos if I lost my data

#2 Memo Pad mpa.bak That is a BAK file with 176 KBs

#3Palm calendar.dba  That is a DBA file with 3032 KB

#4  Palm calendar.dba.bak that is a BAK file with 3,028 KB

#5 address.mdb.bak that is a BAk type file with 2,024 KB on it

I also have the originals in my desktop dat backup folder but sending it to my falsh drive brought the difference to my attention

  I have 2 questions

#1  Can I use this Address.mdb.bak file  which it says in properties is a BAK file that opens with Windows shell command to import from because it is 2024  KB as opposed to the 1764  KB Address file in documents, PAlm OS etc. and might contain my lost  Contacts??

If I can not use it , how did it get in my desktop back up folder in the first place  The only address related file in the same documents location that resembles it,  is the one that has an arrow on its icon and says it is an Microsoft access application.  Did I somehow get this file into my backup before I lost some of my address data ? Is that a possibility ( Hopefully )

#2  when and if I need to import back my memo pad and or calendar for whatever reason,

which of the two do I click on the Movie clip ( MPA) or the MPA. BAK   ,

and in the case of the Calendar the  calendar dba which is a DBA file  or the   Calendar .dba.bak  that is a BAK file .

I still havent got my head around which type is importable back into Palm . Bak files or DBA files or whatever type of address file is importable?

Is it the file without the BAK extension that is restorable , or is that a statement that does not apply across the board .

Thx for your patience and understanding . I must be giving you a headache . I know I gave myself  one

If I may ask what exactly are you trying to accomplish? The .bak files are hotsync backups. If you are just trying to backup your data there are much easier ways to do that. Like just backup the hotsync username folder(copying to another place on your PC) or exporting the data from Palm Desktop. The .bak files are for recovering missing data after a hotsync.

If I better understand what you are trying to accomplish, I can best assist you in that manner

I am trying to accomplish question #2  Retrieve  addrss data that I thought might be on my Palm Desktop Backup   thats contains 1.97 MB where as the file in  Peter P \ documnets \ address contains only 1.76 MB

Is there any way to retreive the data from that file that may contain my missing contacts  and if I tried importing from that file would I get dupes of everything or just maybe get back my missing  contacts

That is the first thing I want to accomplish

HP Recommended
excuse me . I am trying to accomplish question #1  not #2 get all my contacts back
HP Recommended

If that is the case, close Palm Desktop and then go into your hotsync username folder under Palm OS Desktop. Then go into the address folder and rename the address.mdb to address.old. Then rename the address.mdb.bak to address.mdb.

Keep in mind you would need to have file extensions viewed to have this work correctly. If you do not, this will not harm your data. You just will not be able to view it.

To view file extensions do this

Open control Panel go to Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden files and folders uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.

Once this is done then open Palm Desktop and see if you have your contacts back. If not post back.

First in Palm os There are no  address.mdb.  files. There are Only address plain , address .bak,  address.bak.bak amd address db.bak .

All those files contain 1.7 MB .

I am trying to restore the files that are on my desktop that I created the known as Palm desktop data where I exported the address  book data to . That is were the file named   Address .mdb, bak is and that file contains 1.97 MB and was created on 8/14/09 . I beleive that  file being larger and older has my missing contacts .

Should I try to import from the backup data folder (addres.mdb.bak )  leaving the extension as is or will that create duplictaes of everything plus my missing data .In properties is shows as a BAk file and  says it opens with shell command

The botom line is I am trying to retrieve my lost contacts from the backup data I exported without getting more dupes

Thx
