Reason why you can view the mdb.bak is windows does not know what that file does. If you look above in my post there is a way to view all file extensions. You will need to do this. Then with Palm Desktop closed follow the rest of my instructions in my above post.

I received a reply from Cygnus1x that I have 2 threads going. I thought they were 2 different issues , but I asked if I could continue working with Cygnus1x instead of you because I thought we were closer to a solution with him .

Would either of you advise me as to who is willing to help if Cygnus does not want to, so maybe I can get this resolved

 Thx Peter  P

I work with Cygnus and saw the cross over threads. Essentially both Cygnus and I are telling you to do the same thing. Might be in different ways but you need to view the file extensions on your PC then rename them. Here's the post again.

If that is the case, close Palm Desktop and then go into your hotsync username folder under Palm OS Desktop. Then go into the address folder and rename the address.mdb to address.old. Then rename the address.mdb.bak to address.mdb.

Keep in mind you would need to have file extensions viewed to have this work correctly. If you do not, this will not harm your data. You just will not be able to view it.

To view file extensions do this

Open control Panel go to Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden files and folders uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.

Once this is done then open Palm Desktop and see if you have your contacts back. If not post back.

This will work for datebook as well.

First point: in My plam os the only  address .mdb file , is a Microsoft application file .

Is this the one you want me to rename?

Secondly there is absolutely no  file  named Address.mdb.bak  I have gone into control panel and changed the view all extensions function . Absolutely no such thing !

Here is what I am trying to accomplish :

Lets start with a new beginning.  In my Palm Desktop Data that I created as a backup , I have an address folder named  Address.mdb.bak  In properties says it is a BAK file (.bak) that opens with Windows shell commor ,and it contains 1.97 MB or 2,072,576 bytes.  It was created on Monday Aug 17th   and modified on Friday August 14th.  I was hoping there was a way to import this into my “appropriate” address  file  be that either: address.db ; address.db.bak;address.bak or even  address.bak.bak  that  are the only files presently   in that same location  Users\PeterP\Documnets|Palm os .   They  are the only files there and they are all   1.7 MB or   1,789,952 bytes.  I was hoping since the backup file in Palm desktop data was significantly bigger , it would contain the missing contacts.   Also it says modified on Aug 14th and that is before I lost all my DATA.  Do you follow my thoughts so far?

Do you see there are no address.mdb.bak

Cygnus suggested copying and pasting the Data backup folder and copying it into a "test

"name address book , which I did but nothing shows when I go to user name TEST

Follow me I know its confusing> Do you agree with Cyugnus that I can retrieve the DATA from my  backup on Desktop that I created using Palm forum instructions ?

Forgive us, the reason why we reference this file is due to you have in the past. In your own post that you did you stated address.mdb.bak that you saved in a backup file. If this file is not there, that is fine. The file I would like you to rename is address.mdb to address.old. I know this is a Microsoft file. Palm Desktop 6.2.2 was made around them.

Now to recover your data, any file that has .bak in it is safe to rename to .mdb. Make sure though only one file name shows that has .mdb. I.E. address.mdb(This is why you have to rename the other one first. Also it is very important to keep Palm Desktop closed during this time.) Once you have renamed this file, open Palm Desktop and see if you see your data.

The copying and pasting will only work if you rename the file extensions. As for Cygnus instructions I cannot say what steps he was going to give you or not. But I have recovered 100's of data files by doing this process. I know it will work as long as there is data there to recover. Unfortunately there is not at times :smileysad:

Post back if you have more questions

Sorry hence the confusion > in Backups I have an address.mdb.bak file.

Now what do I do exactly to that fileand how do i  get it into the new user test before I try in my own name ?

Please be specific in telling me what file in  Backup to change to what and what to do with it after I have done that .

I believe Cygnus had me change that file from  Address .mdb.bk    it to address (plain ) and copy and paste into TEST  PalmOs \address .

That did not work although I can see the file in Palm Os  Address with 2025 Kb in it and in porperties it says " file " nothing else . But nothing shows on the desktop in

User TEST

You can copy that file and paste it under your test username. Once there rename the address.mdb to address.old and then rename the address.mdb.bak to address.mdb. Open Palm Desktop go to your test user and see if the data is there. If so GREAT, then we have a few options on how to get it to your other username if not then the data is no longer there, and we cannot recover it. :smileysad:

copy from backup in its original name ?? of address.mdg.bak    and paste into  address plain in Plam OS TEST   or where do I paste it ?

? There is already a palm OS address folder there . Copy over that or past it into blank window ??

You say once there rename address mdb.bak I assume you mean to not rename it at all till you copy and paste it . Correct ? Paste it where Into  original Address folder not subfolder

HP Recommended

Before I do that can I delete all the test folders to start totally fresh ??

How would you do that ? Just delete test folder totally or delete whats in address folder or delete entire address folder or do NOTHING ?
