I have two HP 12C calculators that are now missing bars in the display - so for example, an 8 will look like a 6 or an H. Both calculators are not very old and have not been damaged. Has anyone else faced this problem? Is there a solution?

I had the same issue, less than 100 uses on my 12c and a screen where only half of the bars were showing up. I was past the year warranty. I didn't realize mine was broken until the same day that I was going to take a CFP class exam. No local retailers had financial calculators and it was far too late to try and ship a new one. So it tried to repair it, I figured the worst case scenario would be that I would break a defective calculator even more. I followed the steps with the hairdryer and eraser outline in the video below. The video isn't mine and the English isn't great, but the process is the same if you look and see what he does.

There's 6 securing screws on the back on the calculator, 4 under the pads and 2 in the battery compartment. When you open up the case be especially careful to take note of the 3 incredibly small springs. If one pops out of the hole it's easy to figure out what holes they go because they're located in the holes that aren't designated for the screws.
These things must break like crazy because I called around to other local financial professionals in the area and I only found 1 out of the 4 that I called that had a functioning screen. Hope this helps some people.
