How do i install a new battery for my dead touchpad? Last one I tried to open and ended up breaking a bunch of clips and buttons.

The TouchPad is not considered a user-serviceable device.  However, Google is your friend and turns up hits like this one, which includes a link to a third-party repair "guide".

Excellent, thanks for reporting back.  I've opened up a number of Palm devices over the years to replace batteries, screens and digitizers.  It's nerve-racking stuff if you don't want to brick your device...but does get the adrenalin going, doesn't it?

Never have opened a TouchPad, maybe one day if my main one ever starts crapping out.  But so far, over a year of daily use and nightly charging, and it still works like it was new.

Yes it was extremely nerve-racking until I just saw the HP Logo appear after only 5 minutes on the charger. The screws are so tiny and I was fearful with the ribbon, etc. disassembly part.  Now I'm hooked! Been doing laptops for years but now i need new magnifier setup!! Thanks again!!

If it is not user-repairable, where does one go for repair?

Is it possible to install a new battery and test the touchpad without closing the case?

I have 2 TPs that have failed to start up no matter what I have tried to revive them,  I have opened both and have put in replacement batteries with no success in getting them to boot.  I concluded that either the batteries are bad (no charge) or the TP hardware has failed.  It would be helpful to know what the voltages on the battery connector plug of a functional battery should be (pin out voltages) to have any chance of getting the TP to boot up.  Any other words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks,

ALTP

HP has basically given up on the webOS line of devices, and I'm unable to get any information from them (even through the internal contacts that I know!). 😞

There is no definitive "How to fix a dead touchpad" page that I know of, but there are many that offer suggestions and methods to try.  Use Google to find them, and search webosnation.com.

I did revive one dead TouchPad by using tpdebrick, but it only lasted a month before dying again.

Here's my generic reply for dead touchpad.  It does contain a link to the patch I mentioned.

There are several other threads already discussing this topic, but they all say the same things:

--Check your charger.  Many of the USB cables supplied by HP were fragile, and break easily.  Try another micro-USB cable with a charger that supplies 2 amps (2,000mA).  If using an HP charger, check the prongs on the transformer - they are removable, and if twisted out of position no current will flow.

--Try all the resets - simple (hold both the power and center button for 15 - 20 seconds until the HP logo appears).   Advanced (press and hold the power, center, and volume down together until logo appears.  May give the option to completely erase the unit!)

--Use a TouchStone to charge the device if you suspect the female charging port on the TouchPad has been damaged.

--As a last resort, try using the tpdebrick-v004 program.  This is a difficult, but doable re-flash of the device using a computer running Ubuntu, and a program from this link.

I revived one of my touchpads using this method.
