I want to know if I could change my hp media center pc m7590n from 32bit to 64 bit

Is there a way to upgrade my hp media center pc m7590n hardware to get it to 64 bit from the 32 bit. I see that I can only use 4 GB of ram and I want to use more.

Hi:

The maximum amount of memory you can install in that PC is 4 x 1 GB for a total of 4 GB.

Since a 64 bit operating system requires more memory and disk space to run than a 32 bit operating system does, it would not be in your best interests to switch.

If you are running XP, it was only available in the 64 bit edition of XP Professional, and you would have to clean install any operating system when switching from 32 bit to 64 bit.

You cannot do an in-place upgrade from 32 to 64 bit or visa versa.

I see, I'm not sure if I asked the right question.  Is there a way to get it to run 64 bit. Do I need to upgrade the motherboard? Or ... ?

The hardware your PC has already has support for 64 bit operating systems.

All you need to do is to buy a 64 bit operating system.

Windows 7 or older.

What I'm trying to explain to you and apparently not succeeding, is you will be throwing good money after bad if you have to buy W7, Vista or XP 64 bit.

You still can't add more than 4 GB of memory, and the PC may run slower since it takes more memory and disk space for a 64 bit operating system to run.

Oh alright,  I understand now. I wanted to repurpose this pc for use now. It's been in storage for a while and wanted to see if I could do anything with it now. Alright, so I might as well just leave it then?

Yes, if you have to put any money into it to convert to a 64 bit operating system, you should just leave it be.

Since XP has long gone out of support, you will find things like Internet Explorer hardly work at all.

So, I recommend that you install the latest version of Firefox that is supported for XP.
