While I'm sure there may be some users familiar with this, just an FYI - doing so will void your warranty.

Might try a Google search, or check some of the other Android-focused forums like xda-developers.com.

Who cares about the warranty. This machine sucks with Android. It just can`t be of any use as it is. Huge problems with any browser installed, most of the native apps (I guess they work fine on a phone or a tablet but.. not on this machine!), with Skype, slow Internet, no word or .odt, zero multi-task ability.  It is a decent hardware for the price I paid, but for crying that aloud, it has got  a way too small RAM(not expandable btw) and a tiny storage memory (4.94GB usable out the 8 declared.. Google apps take all the space.. btw we can`t completely remove the unwanted apps, that`s the deal with Android, but just merely disable them, if we a re lucky.. they will still be there and keep their own room inside your machine forever..) and a real bad case of Adnroid flu.

An embarassment for a 2014 piece of technology I say.

I think HP should do something about that. Ubuntu is `free` and providing an option to that would cause no additional costs for the company, so why not allowing a way to fix its flaws to its customers?  Perhaps supporting Google is more important than support HP`s own customers. More money that way I guess.

Would love to hear more from HP on how to root this machine (perhaps they could take it back to factory and have Ubuntu reinstalled) I bought so that I will be able to replace its silly OS with an Ubuntu tablet distribution.  Would you care to ask around your collegues and supervisors if that is a `near future possibility`?

I wouldn't use straight Ubuntu (it has become quite bloted since the switch to Unity, KDE not much better) rather Lubuntu ((lightweight LXDE desktop)) http://lubuntu.net/ OR Debian with LXDE http://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/lightweight-debian-lxde-desktop-from-scratch/ - with either, download onto USB stick and install from there, keep us posted !

How about this distribution

Any idea how to install it to my slate 21? Do I need root permission? Would I need to unlock th emachine first? Or just downlaod the image to a usb stick and plug it to the left port of my Slate?  Would that reboot in bios just like a laptop?

Ubuntu for phone sounds great, you could still use touch !   Don't think you need root but yes need to unlock first (hope you have another computer) after unlock,  boot from USB & install (may need to mount the Slate's 'hard disk' before the Ubuntu install program will see it, not sure)
