OK the Upgrade this PC option is automatically choosing the correct OS to install.

Next time for a clean install, I would do as Kyle_b suggested. Choose to to Create Media for Installation on another PC and build a bootable USB stick.

You should have no problems at this point. Let it do its thing and it will ask you questions when its ready for setting up Windows 10 at the end.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Personally, I found no reason to do a clean install aftward on mine, just upgraded only.

I just removed the Windows.old folder and Windows BT leftover folders. That freed up the wasted space and I knew I wouldnt be reverting back to 8.1.

Its up to you though. Some like to clean install anyway after the fact.

Well, guess what?

It's telling me I don't have enough space. I only have 8.43GB free of 21.3GB.

What in the world ... ? I can't even get it installed to do a clean install or anything else ... How incredibly stupid is this???

I cleaned off the Windows-Bit file which freed up enough space, then it tried to install then said "Oops! We can't tell if Windows trie to install. Please run setup again."

WT...??

I don't get why it needs so much space to dowload the upgrade, then another 9 gigs to install it on ... That's over 16GB of space for an upgrade!!!

So you had16 gig free space or 8 gig when you started? I suggested 12 minimum earlier?

You said you reinstalled Windows 8.1 so you should have had at least 12 or more already free.

 Correct?

I also need enough space to put the old windows installation in a folder incase you want to reverse the upgrade.

So ya it needs a lot of space the first time.

I will send you a private message also.

Not sure how to pick up private messages ...

i had 16GB after the factory reset. After downloading the upgrade I had 8.something... I forget what I said now ... I cleaned out the Windows-Bit file and it just started to install when it gave me the error message and wanted me to start over ... It seems to me that every time it downloads the upgrade it treats like a new download instead of just copying over the recent one. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

(Can you let me have those links now? Thanks!!)

YA!!!

Glad we got it figured out.

For everyone else this is what happened.

I connected with the OP and he continued to get low disk space warnings even after I helped him free up over 16 gigs.

When he would run the Media Creation Tool, it would evaluate the space required to run.

During this process, a splash screen would appear asking if he wanted to keep files and programs or delete everything and clean install.

This splash screen would only remain visible for half a second, then the evaluation would continue until it would stop and state more space (9 GB) extra was needed.

With the UI still on screen, I clicked the Back button and was able to choose Clean Install.

The installation went through now without a problem.

And Thisishardwork, I will private message you with the links we discussed.

Glad it is working now and thank you for being patient. 🙂

Oh NO!! I'm not the one that was patient. That was YOU!!

Thank you so so so much for your time and trouble (and to Kyle, too!)

I really really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I can't thank you enough! Without people like you giving up your time, people like me wouldn't be able to operate our computers! You are just plain AWESOME!!

And for everybody else, don't always believe HP Customer Support!
