Hi. At first, I tried simply disabling and re-enabling the I2C device. This did not work. Following this, I did as you suggested, removing the I2C device and restarting my laptop. After doing so and re-opening Device Manager, the I2C device still has the ! mark on it. What should I do now?

At this point, I think your only option would be to back up any files you need to save onto a portable hard drive, and either factory reset the PC using the HP Recovery Manager if your notebook has that option, or create a bootable USB recovery drive using the HP Cloud recovery client tool.

Here is an info link for how to use that tool...

If your touchpad isn't working, it may be a result of a missing or out-of-date driver. On Start , search for Device Manager, and select it from the list of results. Under Mice and other pointing devices, select your touchpad, open it, select the Driver tab, and select Update Driver www.paygonline.com
