HP Recommended

Have a HP Officejet 4500 which worked fine on my old computer with windows XP Professional operating system but will not scan on my new HP computer with windows 8.1 operating system.  The PC can find the printer to print but cannot find the printer to scan.  I have tried to install software from a disc that does not seem to do much if anything and have tried downloading software and latest drivers from HP web site.  Can anyone help?
