There have been numerous reports percolating, around here, reddit, askubuntu, and other spaces, regarding Linux on recent HP Omens having an nvidia device with HDMI sound plus Intel HDA built-in sound, where the Intel device does not come to life and is not available from desktop audio widget controls, though "inxi -A" shows its presence.
One-line fix:
Add a line to, or create, /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
Reboot. Your built-in Intel sound is back.
Mine is a 1053; others report same problem for essentially identical (lower memory/storage/GPU provisioning) 1059.
HP, please take note.
