The Problem: Computer will not recognize a cable being plugged into HDMI port as of two days ago.  Sound control panel still shows audio driver for HDMI port, states that it is not plugged in even though the cable is physically inserted.

Attempted fixes:

  • Unplugging, plugging back in; no changes

  • Using Win+P to change to "Duplicate" and "Extend"; no changes

  • Tried using a different HDMI cable; no changes

  • Tried using an alternative monitor; no changes (Tested both monitor and cable on another device, they function properly)

  • Tried restarting computer; no changes

  • Tried reinstalling display drivers; no changes

  • Tried reinstalling windows; no changes

  • Tried opening case and removing battery using only charge cable to supply power; no changes

  • Tried opening case, unplugging battery, wait 2 minutes, then plug battery back in; HDMI port sends signal again until prolonged sleep/shutdown no longer works after updating BIOS and continues to not work after rolling back

  • Tried restoring BIOS to default settings; no changes

  • Tried updating BIOS to newer version recently found; no changes

  • Tried rolling back BIOS to previous version after updating; no changes

  • Tried rolling back video drivers to 4 previous versions found; no changes, reverted back to latest driver

  • Ran HP Extensive System Check; no problems found

  • Tried following HP's instructions for a hard reset; no changes

The built in display works just fine, and so does everything else. Really, its only the HDMI port that stopped working.

The same day the problem first appeared, I had ran a program called DriverDR in an attempt to check for driver updates after a windows update. At the time the HDMI was working. The program had pulled up drivers for my display adapter and, oddly enough, the monitor I had plugged in to the HDMI port (listed by name with model number, which I had double checked before installing). I had never encountered that before and thought to go ahead and update the driver for that. I used DriverDR in the past and it has never caused me problems, although to be honest I have never been too sure of the program. A few hours later is when the problem first started occurring. A few hours ago today I had checked in my device manager to see if I could find that driver under every tab but it isn't there anymore. All solutions were attempted after this, obviously.
