Multiple (and very recent) Scanning Issues: (1) The scanner will cancel completely on its own in the middle of a multi-page scan from the document feeder; and (2) off and on "Scan to device disabled" issues.
Background:
- Have had the 4650 for 4 years, no previous issues with printing or scanning (both from the screen glass and document feeder), drivers are current, no intermittent network issues from either devices / computers in the house, or remotely via HP Smart.
- Scanning is done via the HP Smart app on the computer. Other HP software prior to the issue was never installed, to include the "HP OfficeJet 4650 Series" icon.
- Since I started having the scanning issues, wireless printing is still working and printing document files up to 20 pages with no issue.
- Two days prior, scanned a 30 page document via the document feeder with no issues.
- Day off issue beginning: scanned one page document via the document feeder, quickly lifted the glass to remove an existing document off the glass, document scanned and saved with no issues. When I attempted to scan a 10 page document through the feeder--started getting the errors above (one or the other after restarting the computer and printer on the next attempt).
Troubleshooting:
- I've run through both the "Scanner Connection Issue" and "'Scanner Failure' error message" topics through to completion on the Virtual Agent with no success (starting of course with powering the printer off then on).
- I've also run the "HP Print and Scan Doctor" for scanning--it will complete the "communication / fixing issues", I'll scan a test page, then try to scan anywhere between 3 and 9 pages--and one of the two outcomes below will happen.
- I've uninstalled and reinstalled both the OfficeJet 4650 device, HP Smart, and all other HP software multiple times with no success.
- I've rebooted the home wireless network, restarted computer / printer, made sure no other device is connected to the internet or streaming, then tried to conduct a scan without success (computer never gets disconnected from the same network)
- I've tried to scan 2-3 pages of the entire document (9 pages) at a time with the intent of compiling them together once complete. At some point in that process, one of the two below issues takes place.
Scanning Attempts: Usually an attempted scan with result in one of two unsuccessful results. All starting with the Scanner active, on the network, and showing a "Ready Status" on HP Smart or the "4650 Printer" icon.
- HP Smart: Will usually scan up to 3-9 pages with no issue via the document feeder (it varies each time when it will stop). At some point (during scanning, or after "scan additional pages" is selected to finish)--HP Smart will still say it's scanning, while the scanner will show "cancelling scan" and feed all the remaining pages through the feeder. HP Smart will not update and still say "scanning". When I close it out and open HP Smart again--the printer will show "offline" even when the printer still says its connected to the network.
- "HP OfficeJet 4650 Series" icon: when I attempt to scan via this software (even chunks of 3 pages, or 9)--at some point the scanner will stop, "Scan to Device Disabled" message will show up, and I'll have to "fix" that via "HP Print and Scan Doctor". I've also done both steps the Virtual Assistant states about "Scan to Device Disabled" (disable on startup via task manager / use HP Smart / etc) without success.
I'm frustrated and baffled--is this a network issue (on the printer's end?), hardware issue, or software issue? I'm trying to resolve it so I can continue to use it, before taking a page out of Office Space in the backyard and buying a new one. Thanks for any assistance insight or ideas I might be missing or haven't' considered / tried.
