I am trying to attach an external display to my laptop. I have a Dell E2220H display that I'd used to connect to my previous laptop with a Display Port to Display Port connection. My new laptop does not have a Display Port connection and so I bought a new cable - ESL Display Port to HDMI - as recommended by my local shop. When connected, the Dell screen reports an error "No DP signal from your device". How can I solve this issue? Do I need to buy a Display Port to USB connector to connect to one of the USB ports? Help gratefully received.

Solution: After the advice posted, I followed-up and now understand that the uni-directional cable purchased assumed DP on my laptop to HDMI, when in fact I needed it to be the other way around. I then sourced the below from Amazon and it works perfectly...
HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter, BENFEI HDMI Input to DisplayPort Output Adapter
