Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Smart Tank 5101 printer.  I want to scan a picture or document.  I have a USB cable connection to the printer from my computer.  I get an error message saying there is no connection because it is a wireless printer.  The printer works fine when I initiate an action from the computer to the printer.   However, when the command is for the scanner to initiate the action, i.e. scan, I get the error message No Connection.  I know the printer is looking for a wireless connection, but I only have a USB connection.
