Toner 134/135 did not last 300 pages? What I print is basic letters or spreadsheets not high in ink use. Why?

If you are reading this thread:

1) The cartridge is advertised at an estimated 1100 copies

2) Printer will not work with other brands of cartridges

3) This was not identified when i bought printer

My original post was longer, somehow it was was shortened.

HP did not respond properly.

Hi @JohnA2025,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I completely understand how frustrating it must feel when the toner doesn’t meet your expectations. Let me clarify a few points that might help:

Page Yield Estimates: The advertised page yield (e.g., ~1100 pages for the 134/135 cartridge) is based on ISO/IEC standard test methodology, which uses a 5% page coverage (about a short letter-sized page with light text). If your prints have higher coverage, even for simple spreadsheets or documents, the actual yield can be lower.

Printer Settings & Usage: Factors like print density settings, font size, bold text, graphics, and even paper type can impact toner consumption. For example, spreadsheets with gridlines often use more toner than expected.

Genuine Cartridge Requirement: HP printers are designed to work with Original HP Toner cartridges to ensure print quality, reliability, and protection from counterfeit products. That’s why third-party toner compatibility is limited.

I’ll stay with you until we figure out the best solution to get the most from your toner.

I hope this helps.

Hi @JohnA2025,

Thank you for getting back.

The 1100-page yield is based on ISO testing at 5% page coverage, which is only a small amount of text per page. Real usage (spreadsheets, documents with gridlines, bold text, etc.) usually consumes more toner and reduces the page count. Print settings, paper type, and cleaning cycles can also affect yield.

If you’d like, I can guide you on adjusting print settings (like using draft mode) to help extend toner life.

Steps to Improve Toner Yield

Use Draft or Eco Mode

In Printer Settings, select Draft or EconoMode for everyday printing.

This uses less toner while keeping text readable.

Print in Black & White Only

For letters or spreadsheets, set the printer to Black & White mode to avoid unnecessary color mixing.

Avoid Unnecessary Bold/Heavy Fonts

Use standard fonts like Arial or Calibri instead of bold or dark fonts that consume more toner.

Print Multiple Pages per Sheet (if possible)

For reference documents, adjust settings to print 2 pages on 1 sheet.

Remove Gridlines & Background Colors

In spreadsheets, disable gridlines or background shading before printing to reduce toner coverage.

Adjust Print Density

Go to Printer Properties → Advanced Settings → lower the density slightly.

A lighter print still looks clear but uses less toner.

Keep the Printer in Good Condition

Regularly clean the printer and avoid humid storage conditions, since dust and humidity can increase toner use.

Print Only What’s Needed

Preview before printing to avoid accidental extra pages (like blank pages at the end).

I hope this helps.
