I tried to update Thunderbolt Dock G2 firmware with SP111940 package. The process stopped because it failed to detect Thunderbolt controller version.
I tried then to update just the Thunderbolt controller part with ThunderboltUpdaterDevice.exe (same package) but it failed with similar error.
All other drivers are up-to-date. HP Assistant doesn't show any new updates.
Any ideas how to update the firmware?

Hello this is the solution:
I found a second person reporting the same issue with Thunderbolt Dock G2 and Zbook 15 G5. that's strange.
so I kept a 830 G5, There was an old Thunderbolt Secure Connect software. with it Thunderebolt firmware upgrade is able to read the current Thunderbolt Control Version.
so I installed latest Thunderbolt Secure Connect sp1331131.
After that installation Thunderebolt firmware upgrade fails like in your case.
so the owrkarounf should be go back to previous version of Thunderbolt Secure Connect software..

I was using https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp94501-95000/sp94596.exe before to install latest version.

Hello
I executed sp111940\firmware\Cypress\Dependency\system_Update.bat and it finished successfully (see log below).
Then I ran SP111940\HPFirmwareInstaller.exe (see photo below).
Base Microcontroller and US USB Type-C PD Controller are now updated.
DisplayPort Hub is still out of date and it still cannot communicate with Thunderbolt controller.
I tried also SP111940\Firmware\Intel\ThunderboltUpdaterDevice.exe again but it failed with the same error as before.
Do you have more tricks up your sleeve? 😉
Thanks for your help.

Hello
before to give up , thinking it's an harware failure, try also these:
remove any device you may have connected to the docking.
I guess your TB Dock G2 has a 230 W power supply.
unplug the USB-C cable fro Zbook 15 G5, wait 30 seconds so Windows recognize it's removed
reconnect and wait 30 seconds to be sure all devices are enumerated
Try again to select firwwareupdate selecting also the force option.
it may seems a stupid question , could you connect the USB-C cable to the second USB-C port ?
more then this I can say or you may try with another HP notebook with USB-C port. do you have another computer ?
bye

It works!!
Thanks a lot, TryToDoMybest!
To recap what I did - for someone that may have the same problem:
1. Uninstall Thunderbolt Software (Start > Add or Remove Programs, search for "Thunderbolt Software" and uninstall)
2. Download the older version of Thunderbolt Secure Connect from https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp94501-95000/sp94596.exe and install it. While installing, it throws couple of errors but it doesn't matter.
3. Run SP111940\HPFirmwareInstaller.exe and click the button to install firmware updates. After a few minutes it's finished (the upper photo). Disconnect/reconnect the dock and restart Windows. If you run HPFirmwareInstaller.exe again, it will show everything is up-to-date.
If you install back the latest version of Thunderbolt Secure Connect (sp1331131 at the moment), SP111940\HPFirmwareInstaller.exe will fail again with the same error as before (failed to detect Thunderbolt controller version). I guess I will stay with the old version.
