installed the latest firmware posted her. No change in status. Have not installed windows 10 yet, but that should be done here in the near future. new motherboard arrived for the other zbook15g3 but i'm doubting that will be the fix.

I may have figured it out!
i've been spending today going through and testing things, and systematically removed windows updates, software and took it down to pretty much bare bones with the issue still persisting.
I then decided to look at settings knowing that drivers were updated and they may have defaulted.
Well in intel RST i found a sata link power management option, and thought... well why not disable it just for laughs. I mean it's sata it can't be doing anything. Well, I haven't had the issue since I disabled this and rebooted even though I don't even have a sata drive.
I will be testing and reinstalling my software, but feel free to test also. If it comes back I will also update. I should be testing this for a week, and will test on both systems to see if it corrects it.
*update, started hapopening again* Don't bother with this one

Strange, this one zbook hasn't had the issue yet as i've been going through and reinstalling software, but it could honestly be a fluke. I haven't started on the other one yet. Worth a shot though! can't hurt!

@RobertWhitten87 wrote:Yup you are correct it is not a fix, I started using autocad and photoshop intensivly and anytime I moved a decent amount of data across the dock it cut out.
How many monitors were you using?
Did the USB devices cut out too?
I've actually just replicated this (twice) in the lab by running some games while on the phone with R&D for the dock.
For me, the whole dock kicked out.
I got it working a again by unplugging the dock and plugging it back in again.
Hasn't happened again just yet.
Bear with us while we tackle these issues.
It's my main focus at present.

2 monitors at 1080p resolution, but can replicate with a solo monitor at 1600x900, usb does cut out also, so does network so seems like the whole dock drops. been through the replug many many times. Fully updated bios/firmware/software. still playing with settings seeing if something is causing it like a powersaving feature, or a windows update... doubting the update as i've gone back to a windows 7 x64 pro clean slate and still happened.

I agree with Robert as far as the Thundebolt dock issues. Doing the firmware and drivers updates made it functionals, but the USB ports keep dying and the external monitor diconnects occaitionally. I have a Sandisk 240GB aftermarket SSD (standard 2.5") and it boots super quick. So fast that waiting for the dock to connect and thus my keyboard to connect costs me logon time. When it does work, the keyboard sometimes studders and types 20 of the last character I pressed on the keyboard. I keep camping the hp software download tool, waiting for another update.
Is there a firmware update for the dock itself?
