HP Z440
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Z440 with 2 x 8GB 2133MHz sticks of DDR4 RAM.

I purchased 2 additional sticks of 8GB 2666Mhz Crucial DDR4 RAM - the Crucial website scanned my system and stated that it was compatible.

When I install the new RAM the motherboard starts up with a red flashing light, there is a warning beep that just keeps sounding, and the system does not boot. I left it to sort itself out and my fans started to speed up to maximum, which I thought meant it was all getting too hot and so I shutdown and removed the RAM. I have tried lots of different positions, and just one stick at a time, and nothing changes.

Why is this RAM not working?

I have tried to look in BIOS (using ESC, F8, F10) to see if I need to change anything but I cannot find any settings related to RAM that I can change. The computer can cope with additional RAM.

I'm wondering if the RAM is faulty?

the ram series you posted (Crucial Ballistix Elite) STILL LACKS THE RAM NUMBERS,

on the ram module will be a number like this one:

BLE2K8G4D26AFEA

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ble2k8g4d26afea

and simply looking at the specs we see that this is NOT A ECC TYPE RAM MODULE, and therefor will not work in the z440

the SK. Hynix ramyou linked to has part#  HMA41GU6AFR8N and the specs for this part state it is ECC type ram

i have no idea what information you entered on the crucial web site (did you use their  web page to select HP z440/)

but it was obviously wrong  (the correct info is HP then Z series workstations then z440, then click on check compatability)

here is the correct crucial page for z440 ram (ecc type)

when posting a help request like this PLEASE INCLUDE THE RAM INFORMATION FROM YOUR MEMORY STICKS

we need the information off the module(s) that works noted and then the ram information from the modules that do not work

we also need to know which slots you are installing the ram in ram slot usage info can be found on the cover of your z400 and also in the z400 user manaul

Manufacturer of these sticks?

> I purchased 2 additional sticks of 8GB 2666Mhz Crucial DDR4 RAM

Why did you not purchase more 2133 Mhz RAM?

A few possible suggestions:

1. Put both sticks of the slower RAM in slots #1 and #2, and the faster RAM in #3 and #4.

2. Put the slower RAM in slots #1 and #3, and the faster RAM in #2 and #4.

3. Put the slower RAM in slots #1 and #2, leaving the other slots empty.

4. Put the slower RAM in slots #1 and #3, leaving the other slots empty.

5. Put both sticks of the faster RAM in slots #1 and #2, and the slower RAM in #3 and #4.

6. Put the faster RAM in slots #1 and #3, and the slower RAM in #2 and #4.

7. Put the faster RAM in slots #1 and #2, leaving the other slots empty.

8. Put the faster RAM in slots #1 and #3, leaving the other slots empty.

Which combinations work?

How many chips on each stick of the slower RAM?

How many chips on each stick of the faster RAM?

also as i was posting the previous reply i noticed while the header says z400, the sub header says z440

the z400 and z440 both require "ECC" type ram and said ram must be installed in the correct slots

since i allready posted the z400 mem spec, here's the z440  mem config information

Yes, sorry it is a Z440 workstation.

The computer was sold with 16GB of RAM stamped with HP - it is SK Hynix brand 2133MHz and seems to be the one noted in this site: https://www.skhynix.com/products.view.do?vseq=1548&cseq=75

It works in any slot and has been moved around a bit. I now have the two of them in slots 1 and 3.

The new RAM modules are Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB DDR4 2666MHz. I went with them because the Crucial website offered a scan for compatibility, and I thought that would give me a good answer to choose the right RAM.

I've tried them in a number of arrangements and the computer responds the same. A red light flashes on the motherboard and a continuos beeping sounds and windows won't boot.

So, I've just tried the two Hynix modules on the outer black slots with the Ballistix in the two inner black slots - same result, red lights and warning beeps follwed by fan turning up to 100%.

Then I tried the two Ballistix on the outer black slots and the Hynix on the inner two black slots - same result.

Okay.

That number for the Ballistix is BLE8G4D26AFEA.16FBD

And I used the CrucialScan system to identify my machine directly.

And yes, it is not an ECC type - that would be it.
