Paul,

Well in my book I still consider you as being an expert, I guess I just have some kind of a 'phobia' or something about computers when they stop functioning properly. As far as the hard drive goes I tend to agree with your assessment, while pressing the power switch it feels like it always did as far as feeling a 'click' in the internal mechanism. The way I feel currently is knowing what this computer cost, I really wouldn't want to spend much additional money on it trying to get it to work, instead I could put that money towards a newer computer. As always, thanks so much for responding, stay safe & healthy.

You're very welcome, David.

I toyed with the idea of buying a used but tested and working motherboard for my 6200 Pro off eBay, but decided not to throw good money after bad.

The PC is old, and I don't need it.

I would have only fixed it and donated it.

So, I will skip the fixing part and bring it to the local PC repair shop, and they can strip it for parts.

I'll keep the 250 GB SSD out of it.

Have a great week David, and you stay safe and well too!

Hi Paul,

I really hope you're having a great week so far, I just thought I'd send you an update about my hp desktop that I'm having an issue with. Yesterday I kept thinking about what to try next to resolve my issue, the great thing is the desktop computer I'm currently using is also a hp brand only an older model. To eliminate the power supply as being the cause of my issue I replaced the one in my working computer with the one that I'm having an issue with, my computer powered on & booted up properly so at least I know the power supply is functional. Just like with most every other device..etc. that we have to deal with in our everyday lives at some point they might all of a sudden have an issue that causes them to function properly. I have all of the devices in the same area as my non working computer plugged into what I consider a good surge suppressor, but I know from experience that somehow a surge can still 'sneak' through and cause some damage to a device that's plugged into it, I guess it's possible that's what might have possibly happened to my computer, especially affecting something on the motherboard. Anyway, since I still value your knowledge I just thought I'd keep you posted, hopefully that's okay with you. Have a great day & remainder of the week.

Hi, David:

Great troubleshooting by you!

I'm thinking this may be one of those times when you have to throw in the towel, and as you wrote, put any money into fixing that one toward another PC.

As I had wrote earlier, you can find some nice bargains on old HP business desktops on eBay.

I wouldn't go anything older than a Prodesk 600 G1 or an Elitedesk 800 G1

Enjoy the rest of your week too!

Hi Paul,

Of course NOT to be bragging on myself or anything of that nature, but since I've never given up easily when it comes to trying to fix something, a couple of days ago I decided to disconnect the wires that are connected to the momentary contact atx power/reset switch and from there just touch the ends of the two wires together to see if my computer would try and boot up normally. That's what was causing my issue because now when I perform that procedure (as long as I have the two wires touching for the correct amount of time) my computer is functioning pretty well normally. The biggest issue I'm currently having is due to my deleting the factory installed recovery partition on my hard drive, ever since doing so I'm receiving a 'FW recovery error' message, and of course I'm not really sure as to how to get the factory installed recovery partition back ? Please continue to stay safe & healthy !

That is great news, David.

At least you figured out the problem.

There might be a BIOS setting that you can change to disable that notification.

None of my HP business desktops have recovery partitions on the drives because I changed all the hard drives out for solid state drives a long time ago, and I don't get any messages like that.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

Even though the computer we're discussing in this conversation has a sata hard drive installed in it, I know that the motherboard does have a esata port on it. I always keep extra ssd lying around in case I need one for a device. Now you've got me thinking if I could install one of them in my computer, if nothing else I'm sure it would be much more efficient as well as being faster. I'm trying to figure out how to reinstall the factory installed recovery partition that I for some reason uninstalled off of my existing hard drive. I'm thinking I might be able to use the built-in hard drive utility that's already available in windows. I'm referring to the diskpart application, I have been using the free version of minitool partition manager with my hard drive. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Hi, David:

I installed 2.5" SATA SSDs in all of my HP business desktops, and they all work fine.

The 8200 Elite does not have an eSATA connector.

The only thing is that you need to buy a 3.5" to 2.5" drive adapter to properly mount the 2.5" drive where the 3.5" drive goes.

Paul,

Once again I need to give you a big thank you for sharing your knowledge with me. On my HP Compaq 6300 SFF computer, I do have a copy of both the hardware and maintenance manual already, it's sounding like I might have a genuine project to do over the weekend. It would be a dream come true if I could actually install a ssd into my computer.

Anytime, David.

Yes, replacing the 3.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD will make a big difference.

I liked the performance improvement the SSD made in my 8200 Elite so much, that I decided to install one in both of my older HP 8000 Elite and dc7800 PC's, and even though those only have SATA II ports, the SATA III SSD still made a big improvement over the mechanical hard drives.

You will not regret a decision to install a SSD if you have any just lying around like I did.

You already know what drivers you need to reinstall too.

Paul
