macOS 10.13 High Sierra

HP7740 suddenly does not recognise tray 2, states "tray 2 is empty or open" clearly its neither, maybe a sensor is not recognising the tray? any suggestions??

I see that the printer is in an error state, I'd recommend you follow the steps below-

 

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

 

Perform the steps from the document 'Out of Paper' Displays, Printer Does Not Pick Up Paper to isolate and resolve the issue.
