I have a Designjet 120. Yesterday while running plots, I ran out of ink. I replaced the cartridge and went to resume printing. When the display came up it didn't show the cartridge as full, ( about a quarter full, with a light haze going up to full), when the plotter reset it said there was a problem with the carriage. I reset the cartridge and tried again. Same thing. I opened the top and examined the carriage. Apparently there was not a seal. After the plotter had primed the cartridge twice, there was ink everywhere. I removed the carriage and now need to clean it. Will rubbing alchohol be ok to use? It seems to be the best thing on other surfaces for the ink. As ink cartridges are unavailable in my town I've ordered another to see if it was just the cartridge. Has anyone else had this happen, and if so what was your solution? On another note, my cutter is not fully returning to it's home position. The carriage drops it off about an inch short, and it will not pick up for the cut. You can push the cutter to its home position easily and then it cuts. Kind of inconvenient.

After disassembly and thorough cleaning, it now tells me that the other cartridges  that were in it are bad. I had a Cyan and after replacing it it shows good. **bleep**.

I guess nobody else has had this problem. I cleaned and replaced all cartridges and same thing happened again. Now I have ordered new print heads. I guess i will see if that fixes it. A lot of folks have looked at this but not even a suggestion. i remember when this forum was helpful. I've always bought HP for that reason. Good support. Times are changing, guess I'll shop around if I have to replace it.

There have been some issues with cutter on this series but usually you will get a chattering sound due to a broken gear in the cutter. As far as cleaning the leaks, I have found that water is as or more effective than alcohol and avoids the possible damage to plastics in printer. Especially the encoder strip, as alcohol will remove the printed microgrid from the surface. Also ensure that power is disconnected and you allow ample time for everything to dry before applying power.
