Hi @StanAtkinson,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP OfficeJet 7740 printing issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Problem: Black Line Appearing on Word Printouts

Check Print Settings:

  • Ensure that you have selected the correct print settings in Word. Verify that you haven't inadvertently set any extra formatting or lines in the document.

Review Printer Properties:

  • Open the printer properties from the print dialog. Check for settings related to margins and print quality that might affect how documents are printed.

Run a Diagnostic Print:

  • You can print a diagnostic page to check for any ink system issues. This will help ascertain if the black line is due to printhead malfunctions.
  • Load plain paper in the printer.
  • On the printer control panel, touch Setup, then select Print Reports and choose Print Quality Diagnostic.

Problem: PDF Printing Error

Update or Reinstall PDF Software:

  • Ensure that your PDF reader software is up to date. If the error persists, try reinstalling the software.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Visit the HP support website to check if there are updated drivers available for your printer model that might resolve compatibility issues with PDF files.

Check Printer Status:

  • Ensure the printer is connected to the computer and recognized by the operating system. Restart the printer and computer to resolve connectivity issues.

Ensure the Printer is Set as Default:

  • Go to the computer’s Devices and Printers settings and make sure the HP OfficeJet 7740 is set as the default printer.

Print from a Different PDF File:

  • Try printing a different PDF document to determine if the issue is with the specific file.

I hope this helps.
